Wordpress needs to be able to write to your .httaccess file in order to create SEO friendly URL's. If you need to manually add additional rules or configurations to your .httaccess file, make sure to include them outside of the "# BEGIN wordpress ... # END wordpress" block. Anything that is added to the file between those two Wordpress comments will eventually get overwritten.
